Richard implored Dora months ago
To imagine a new home
Far from familiar El Paso
Where their family could grow

A new life inside of her
The first son of their own
His confidence made it easier
Mixed hope with the unknown

Packed belongings, prepared the kids
To journey five days south
Steering their staid Missouri mules
Across the Rio Grande so vast

All their dreams manifest
Living off the land at Casa Alta

Two stories tall and of red brick
Hillside in Chihuahua

Richard’s absent father never
Passed on wealth to his son
Because he lost all, his land
To the many failed games of chance

Like a bloodthirsty bull charging
With its eyes sealed shut
Dora can’t help but worrying
Her Richard’s being similarly abrupt

Gazing into those soft brown eyes
He caressed her jet-black hair
Soothes her racing mind, so restless
With the his dreams he enjoyed to share

Dora whispers a nightly prayer
To her newborn son
The following words steel her nerve
With faith in the Supernatural above

“When, the deep grief come stealing in
And trials are hard to bear,
Tell all to me, dear, every one,
That I may have a share

Or, if temptation ‘side you stands
With his great promise false
Just think of me and stand up brave
You’ll have no deep remorse

When our good Master calls me on
